Irma's Weight Loss Story: Out with the old, in with the new …
Thursday was a hectic day, full of meetings with the last and final being the Weight Loss appointment I had with Divine Weight Loss in Riverview, FL.
I walked in excited and handed the receptionist the intake forms I had previously downloaded and filled out to save time. I waited for a few minutes, then was called back to the exam room. I was asked to step on this high-fangled scale that printed out what looked like a receipt. Apparently, this scale is way more than just a scale, it is a body composition analyzer (pretty cool). You can see my intial results (left). It’s pretty sad.
Then, the medical assistant took my measurements, blood, and performed an EKG. Once the EKG results were ready, Dr. Roque, came in for a consult.
We went over the HCG Ultimate Plan consisting of the HCG shots, which you can take in the stomach, arm, or the backside. The needle is pretty small, not like a tetanus shot or anything. I was also prescribed phentermine as an appetite suppressant and the diet consists of 500 calories. Dr. Roque did say that 700 would also suffice. Since, I decided I was going to do this and do it right (just like my sister did), I am going to stick with the 500 calories. Additionally, since my diet consisted of coke all day long, she thought it would be good for me to also take an oral B-12 Supplement (that I purchased on-site) to help with potential fatigue I might encounter. She also warned me to avoid taking the HCG injection on heavy days of “that time of the month”.
Armed with my binder of information, I learned the plan as Divine Weight Loss had set forth:
The program is 42 days. The first two days, I can “binge” by loading up on fats, proteins and carbs, everything except “white sugar”. This apparently prepares your body for accessible “fat” in it. I chose Sunday and Monday as my “binge” days, since Monday was the 4th of July and I wanted to enjoy it. Since they had called me on Friday to let me know my blood work was fine and I could begin, I decided to wait an extra day.
Let the Low Calories Begin:
Tuesday morning, my first day of 500 calories, I took the HCG injection, the phentermine (appetite suppressant) and the oral B12. My breakfast consisted of a 100 calorie English muffin with spray butter, 2 slices of turkey bacon (which technically is not allowed, but I don’t eat eggs, so I needed protein), and a few apple slices with a large glass of water. As an aside, I must say, I have never eaten an apple before (nor a grapefruit, or a strawberry or a blueberry — crazy I know!). I was fine.
I missed coke.
Before Tuesday, I would wake up and have a coke, drink coke all day and before bed, have a coke. This is definitely a culture shock. I definitely believed I would have a raging headache, but oddly enough, I didn’t…all day. I still had a little coke in the fridge at 11:30, when I went to start lunch (chicken breast and steamed broccoli) and ceremoniously dumped it down the sink.
On my way to pick up my son from a friend’s house, I purchased strawberries and blueberries for the very first time. Now, strawberries are my dessert (or a snack mid-meal). I love them! They are allowed on this diet and encouraged! Yay!
For dinner, I made lean beef tips with green beans. I made mashed potatoes for the boys in the house, but I wasn’t tempted to eat them.
By Wednesday afternoon, I had another appointment with the doctor. This appointment was a full follow-up from the first appointment and to check my progress. Keep in mind, I had only 1 day and a half of the 500 calories. Considering my awful diet, the doctor was surprised that my bloodwork came back next to perfect (except potassium which she told me to eat more spinach like Popeye!). She asked how everything was going. I mentioned that the phentermine made me jittery in the morning. She directed me to talk half.
But more importantly, WHAT WERE THE RESULTS right?
I lost 2 pounds
I lost 3 inches from my waist
I lost 1 inch from my thigh
I left the office flying high, elated by the results in such a short amount of time.
THE TRUE TEST: Networking
Thursday presented a real test of will for me. Each month, YP Brandon meets for the networking social. This month happened to be at a local sports bar known for their chicken wings (my favorite!). Any happy hour social would not be complete without alcohol. Wait —- did I mention no drinking on this program! How am I going to network (and smile) amidst the aroma of chicken wings and aura of happy hour?
Since I ate a snack of 2 melba toasts, lightly drizzled with EVOO (as Rachel Ray would say), plum tomato and onion slices, I was not hungry. I ordered a WATER and flitted about the room. It was the first time I left a networking event without a bar-tab!
Good Morning Sunshine!
Today I woke up (Friday) and jumped on the scale. 188. Wow! What a great way to start the day, knowing you lost FIVE pounds in 4 days. Everyone on facebook, twitter and IRL (in real life) are being so very supportive. This means the world to me. More importantly, I am expanding my food palette and really paying attention to what foods I eat. My diet is much more colorful….quite fitting for a colorful person like me. Don’t you agree?
My best friend is heading to see Dr. Roque today. This is exciting, not only that her health and physique will improve, but now I have a checks and balances system. She will keep me in line and vice-versa.
My daily mantra, when I think about french fries (my favorite food):
I can do ANYTHING for 42 days!
